Relay for Life - 10:11 PM

LP Field, East Nashville, TN:  It's 10:11 PM and I'm sitting on a camping chair, outside of LP Field, on a break from the Relay for Life.  After the official welcome from event organizers, the walk to beat cancer began a bit after 6 PM with the first lap taken by survivors, led by a marching drum team.

I finally met our team's honoree, Meghan Carlson, who has a smile that can light up a room (or a field!) and was wearing a fabulous bright pink wig.  Though, in theory, I'm walking for "the cause," I was humbled and honored to know that my efforts (and the donations of my sweet friends and family) were actually going to help someone so brave and so REAL.

And then the walking began.  My friend, Kortney, who invited me to join her team (and made me promise that we would walk together the whole time), started off with a brisk trot but eventually slowed it down to a mid-paced stroll when we realized that we have 12 HOURS of walking to do.  My breaks will consist of grabbing a cup of coffee (for warmth and caffeine), adding another layer of clothes (56 degrees currently) and a bit of blogging.

I also hope to grab a few shots that are able to capture the point of the Relay being an overnight event -- cancer never sleeps.  I already feel that I have a purpose here, even if it's simply walking... for 8 more hours... (wow).
