Let It Ride

Nashville, TN:  In a impressive attempt at finding something atypical to do on a 2nd date, I was taken on a 3 hour evening cruise on the Cumberland River.  While docking the ship, I couldn't get one of my favorite songs by Ryan Adams and the Cardinals out of my head.  It starts a little something like this:

"Moving like the fog on the Cumberland River
I was leaving on the Delta Queen.
I wasn't ready to go, I'm never ready to go.
27 years of nothing but failures and promises
that I couldn't keep, Oh Lord,
I wasn't ready to go,
I'm never ready to go."
Cruising down the calm waters, I couldn't help to think "I know exactly what Ryan was feeling when he sang those words," though in actuality I probably have no f*ing idea what he's really talking about, since he's a bit... let's just say, eccentric (as in, I really don't know what goes on in his head).

The good news is that I'm six years past those first 27 and for the most part, the majority of failures lay heavier in the past than in the present.  The better news is summed up in the next part of the song:

"Let it ride -
Let it ride easy down the road
Let it ride -
Let it take away all of the darkness
Let it ride -
Let it rock me in the arms of strangers, angels until it brings me home
Let it ride -
Let it roll -
Let it go."
Ahhh.... what peace in letting the Cumberland roll me easy down the road, take away my darkness and rock me in the arms of strangers (until he brings me home).

And now, may this song get stuck in your head.
