Nashville, TN: Last night, I went to hear Eric Volz speak. Eric is the son of a touring friend of mine. He is four years younger than me. He is from Nashville. But the main thing that sets us apart is that he was sentence to 30 years in prison and spent over a year in a Nicaraguan jail for a crime he was falsely accused of. During this intense period of time, Eric spoke of grasping for God to get him through the emotional, psychologically and physical torture. I am hesitant when I hear people -- especially those in the South -- speak of anything religious or spiritual based, for fear that their evangelistic words of 'being saved' will only prove to be another way to turn me off and away from the spiritual path I still struggle to stay on. But Eric's authentic description of at times literally only having God as a means to survive confirmed that God - as spirit - will show up in the darkest hour.
When asked, "what's your vision for the future?" Eric paused and stared ahead before he answered. "God knows," he responded, perhaps once a cliche, now a simple truth.
