Nashville, TN: I used to hate Sundays. Actually, hate is an understatement. I used to loathe them, fear them, do anything in my power to avoid them (which is actually impossible... but damnit, I tried). Sundays are meant for resting and enjoying not doing anything after a busy week. But somehow the day is always tied into families and centered around plus ones. When I was single, I could busy myself all week with work, fill up the nights with activities and dates, but I couldn't escape the acute awareness of my aloneness on Sundays. When I would go to church in the morning and be with an entire congregation, I knew I would eventually go home by myself.
Even though I have a love in my life now, I don't just brush off Sundays and think "at least I'm not there anymore!" In fact, I honor this space even more, grateful to know how it felt to have been in the ditch, and to truly be thankful for the opportunity to enjoy the day again. And let me be clear that even though I am not alone right now, it does NOT take away my normal fears, anxiety or painful realizations. The grass is not necessarily greener... it's just a different shade and has an umbrella and cocktail (and a cute boy) waiting for me.
However, what I've realized is that there's actually nothing spectacular about Sundays just because you're with someone. In fact, this Sunday morning, in particular, I survey the normal-ness of the thing I once cringed at: coffee in my Emerson Alumni mug steaming, Tuscan Earth candle burning, laundry spinning, air conditioning blowing.... and the boy surfing (the internet, that is). That's right -- I am lucky enough to spend this lovely Sunday with my sweet and we are both on our computers. But just the BEING together is what is truly sweet.
In fact, I really want to share some of the websites he's been showing me. The beginning of this blog is just a tangent (as opposed to the middle of my blogs being that way) and the REAL reason behind this musing is to link to some random and interesting flash websites he's discovered. A long way to get there, but check these out:
An art project created in Germany where you point-and-click to find your way out of each room to move onto the next. But sometimes beware - you may have to do a little detective work to make it out.
Spanish for "I'm Your Air," this song from Labut is not only dreamy (and makes me want to actually start learning from my Rosetta Stone immediately), but also offers an interactive video. Your cursor doubles for a paint brush and you move it to design your own imagery to the flow of the melody.
Another interactive music video from a Long Beach, CA indie band. You get to choose the variations of instruments each of the four band members play, as well as the color of spotlight. For fun, you can even click directly on them to stop them from playing and see each bored and slightly annoyed. Actually, that's not really fun for anyone.
And now back to my regularly scheduled tangent... off to the gym, then to do a bit of work, then to play a bit of Wii, perhaps... but not before I sign off with one more non-sequitur (which hopefully ties some of this rambling together)...
