Sax and the City

Lexington, KY: A friend asked me to make her a Mayer Mix. This was not an easy feat since not only does he has a ton of great music to choose from, but also because she's super smart and a musical reviewer of sorts, so I can't just throw on "Your Body Is A Wonderland" and call it a day (no offense to one of my original favs).

I've been spending the last few mornings shuffling through his albums while I shuffle around my hotel room du jour, searching for the perfect mix of songs. But as I've been listening and pondering, one sound keeps grabbing my attention.

The Sound of Sax.

Ah, yes. I had almost forgotten about that particular instrument in a live band configuration (as recently replaced with fiddles and dobros). And I'm not referring to the sound of just your average brass player, but more specifically, one of my former (and forever) favs, Bob Reynolds.

So many of JM's songs are sprinkled with the golden sound and when you're lucky, you get to experience a full-fledged sax solo. A quick trip down memory lane (thanks to youtube) brought me back to a groovy little hang in Austin:

and then took me on a full-fledged guilty pleasure ride (oh, how those crisp white gloves simply made it complete....):

But then I remembered something even more special than any youtube video could display: my very own song. I had been asking the master to write me a song for forever and it wasn't until this very year that he fulfilled my ain't-ashamed-of-loving-a-little-smooth-jazz cravings. It actually was a birthday gift but I was a little distracted by the showering of love I got in March that I forgot to even mention it here.

Seems as though my mix project created a saxual reaction... just maybe.
